You can get the new 4GB 360 Slim bundled with the Kinect for £249.99. 4GB 360 S is due for release on 20th August. But both can be pre-ordered. Another thing is that some dealers are selling the 360 S 250GB for a cut price of £189.99, with Argos offering 3 games alongside the console for a total of £199.99.

The new Xbix 360 Slim contains, a 250 GB hard drive, and built in wi-fi. The power adapter for the console has also cut down its size. Slim 360’s hard drive can be replaced. Hackers Jailbreak iPad

Hackers Jailbreak iPad

The iPad has only been on sale for less than three days, and already hackers have jailbroken it to get around Apple’s restrictions reported by Wired.

MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team committed to hacking the iPhone OS, has jailbroken the iPad after just a day of tinkering. The hack gave him root access to the iPad and allowed him to install non-approved applications and to run apps simultaneously. It uses the same exploit employed to jailbreak the current OS 3.1.3 iPhone.

The fast hack was made possible by essentially using the “Spirit” jailbreak designed to open up the iPhone, according to MacNN. This uses a browser exploit to open up the OS.

The port is in the early stages, and there is no download for eager tinkerers yet, but, along with efforts by iPhone master hacker George Hotz, it won’t be long before there is an easy, one-step hack that lets anyone gain the advantages MuscleNerd has demonstrated.

“I’ve known about this exploit since the time of PurpleRa1n,” Hotz said of the iPad jailbreak.

What is most interesting here, though, is that the iPad is running the newer 3.2 version of the iPhone OS, which means that Apple’s engineers haven’t yet plugged the hole which allows this exploit. That may be because there simply wasn’t time in the rush to get things finished for launch.

It may also be that, now the device is divorced from tightly bound AT&T contracts, Apple simply doesn’t care. After all, this won’t affect the target mainstream market at all. It could, however, provide a small boost to sales amongst the geeks who absolutely must have multitasking and non-Apple apps.

Chinese hackers crack India’s top defence secrets

Chinese hackers crack India’s top defence secrets

The computer systems of scores of Indian embassies, military establishments and corporate bodies, as well as the email account of the Dalai Lama, were hacked by a Chinese cyber spy ring as reported by Hindustan Times.

Hundreds of documents, including classified files, were stolen, says a Canadian cyber security team that monitored the ring — the Shadow Network — for eight months.

The Shadow Network focused on India, especially its military. The Canadians, in effect, hacked the hackers and saw many documents themselves.

“We snuck behind the backs of the attackers and picked their pockets,” team member Ronald Deibert told NYT.

The Chinese hackers stole foreign ministry reports on India’s policy in West Africa, Russia and West Asia. They got National Security Council secretariat assessments of security situations in Assam, Nagaland, Tripura and Manipur as well as the Maoist problem.

The penetration of India’s defence establishments was remarkable. Three air force bases, two military colleges and an array of military institutes like the Army Institute of Technology, Pune, were broken into.

The Canadian team saw the hackers access over 300 military documents.

The hackers seemed interested in any defence information they could find: from sensitive issues like live fire exercises and Project Shakti — the army’s artillery command system — to more innocuous material like personnel files.

“This is a very serious, broad spectrum assault,” said strategic technology expert Ajay Lele, whose own agency, the Institute for Defence and Security Analysis (IDSA), was robbed of 180 documents.

The Shadow Network broke into computers of analysts and stole reports on India’s missile systems. It hacked those of academics and journalists for work on Kashmir. Data was also stolen from firms like Tata and DLF. The Canadians informed

Indian intelligence on March 24 and were instructed on how to dispose of the classified data.

The ring is believed to be based in Chengdu, in China’s Sichuan province. The cybersleuths, based at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs, avoided saying this was government-approved but did say it was “possible”.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said: “We have from time to time heard of this kind of news. I don’t know the purpose to stir up these issues.”

However, the Indian security establishment has little doubt the Shadow Network is cast by Beijing. Says K. Santhanam, former IDSA head: “These rings are normally consortia in which Chinese academia, intelligence and military work together.”

Indian officials said the foreign ministry server was breached last year and a security audit “traced the Internet protocol addresses left in the wake of the hacking back to mainland China”. The air force too reported an officer’s account being hacked last month and the Net trail led back to China.

The hackers had a clear India focus, says the report. Of 130 Net protocol addresses compromised, 62 were from India.

Apple to Launch Two New iPhones This Summer

Apple to Launch Two New iPhones This Summer

According to WSJ, Apple will launch 2 iPhones in this summer instead of one. Apple launches one new iPhone each year in June and July since its launch in 2007.

One iPhone will be for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless. This new model will be with CDMA capability used by Verizon Wireless. With launch by Apple and Verizon iPhone set, AT&T will lose its competitive edge over Verizon and other operators. AT&T is enjoying an exclusive relationship with Apple from last three years over iPhone in US market.

CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) is based on several protocols used in 2G, 3G and 4G cellular communications. CDMA is the technology that is used by Verizon, Sprint Corp. and a few other operators in countries including South Korea and Japan.

The model based on CDMA capability, for Verizon Wireless, will be manufactured by Taiwanese company Pegatron Technology Corp. This will be the first iPhone based on CDMA technology.

Second iPhone will be with GSM/UMTS standard and AT&T’s network is based on this technology. GSM is used by most of the carriers throughout world. This iPhone will be manufactured by Taiwanese company Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple’s previous iPhones in last 3 years.

Orascom Telecom 4Q Net Loss $46M On Algeria,Pakistan Tax

Orascom Telecom 4Q Net Loss $46M On Algeria,Pakistan Tax

Orascom Telecom Holding (OT), the largest Arab mobile company by subscribers, said Monday its net loss for the fourth quarter of 2009 was $46 million due to unfavorable events in Algeria and a tax-rate increase in Pakistan.

The company didn’t give a fourth-quarter comparative figure in its statement.

Orascom Telecom net profit in the third quarter of 2009 was almost $181 million. The company’s 2009 net profit was $318 million.

The results were below analysts’ forecasts. Cairo-based investment bank CI Capital had said it expected net profit to increase 35.6% to $116 million in the fourth quarter.

Total number of subscribers reached 93 million, up 19% from a year earlier, the company said in an emailed statement.

“Income was mainly impacted by the unfavorable events that took place in Algeria, as well as the increase in the tax rate in Pakistan,” OT said in a statement after the close of trade.

The company said its net revenue for 2009 was $5.07 billion, a decrease of 4.9 % from last year.

Orascom said Monday that its rights issue was fully subscribed. The number of subscribed ordinary shares was 4.4 billion shares.

Orascom Telecom undertook the rights issue to strengthen its balance sheet as it attempts to resolve an ongoing tax dispute with Algerian authorities.

Orascom was slapped with $600 million tax claim and penalties for the fiscal years 2004 to 2007 despite the fact that Orascom Telecom Algeria, or OTA, was tax exempt until mid-2007, the company said in November.

“The $800 million rights offering gives us the time flexibility to reach the most beneficial outcome in Algeria,” said Orascom Telecom’s Chairman Naguib Sawiris in the statement.

“We are keen to stay in Algeria; it is one of our main assets and until this incident we were very happy there. However, we need to understand if our investment is welcome there or not. If not, we will consider other options,” he added.

Orascom Telecom is in a one-year dispute with France Telecom (FTE.FR, FTE) over their stakes in Mobinil, Egypt’s largest mobile operator by market subscribers.

An Egyptian court earlier this month said it set March 27 as the ruling date for Orascom Telecom’s appeal to overturn approval of a France Telecom offer for the outstanding shares of Mobinilk, whose formal name is Egyptian Co. for Mobile Services (EMOB.CI).

OT has operations in countries including Algeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, Bangladesh and North Korea. OT shares closed Monday 5% lower at EGP5.56 in a broadly negative market.
